As a 10 year veteran in the home-based business industry, I became fed up with all of the fly by night money games that are plaguing the internet these days. It is not uncommon to find the same people to be chasing the same people from one money making deal to the next. I have always been passionate about Network Marketing because I know that it can be a viable way for the average person to do something significant for themselves and their families, but only if it’s done right.

Here is some food for thought:

I’m going to tell you the only thing that you will ever need to consider when looking at any home based business/MLM/Network Marketing opportunity. This one thing will save you a lot of heart ache and will get you past all of the hype to see an opportunity for what it is. Here goes…

Does the product stand on it’s own? And here is what I mean by stand on its own; can you make a full time income by retailing a product that everyone is already sold on, at the same or better price than anyone else and without having to recruit a single person into the business? If the answer is yes, then you have a winner. If you can supplement or even surpass your current 9 to 5 income through retail sales alone, then recruiting becomes a natural function and is no longer an uncomfortable process. People who see the value in purchasing the product are far more likely to see the value in sharing it with others. This gives you the opportunity to make a living while you are passively building your fortune.

Another thing to look at is the actual value that the products and services are providing. There is perceived value and then there is actual value. Many home based business companies sell high ticket items with a “perceived value” and pay out 80% to 90% of the revenue in commissions. They might sell a product for $2,000 and you make a $1,600 commission. The question in this scenario would be “is the mark up to pay higher commissions justifiable or is it another money game that is designed to recruit sales people who recruit sales people who have to buy the product in order to qualify for their commissions?” The answer to this question is found in the answer of another question. “Would you and the people you know purchase this product even if there was no opportunity attached to it?

We’ve always heard that the people who get rich in Network Marketing are the ones who got in early and were positioned close to the top. That is why the industry attracts so many people with a get rich quick mentality. I have watched the same groups of people follow the same leaders from one new business opportunity to the next, over and over and over again, in hopes that they will be in early enough to ride the momentum and make a bunch of money by default. There are two major problems with this approach. For one, these people are giving up the responsibility for their success to someone else. The other problem is that 95% of these start-up companies are out of business in the first year. For an industry that brags on it’s ability to create a life long residual income, very few people actually experience that kind of success. Most people keep chasing the dollar and end up rebuilding their businesses over and over again until they get tired and quit.

Instead of getting involved with a start up business, you can always join a company that has been around for several years and feel pretty safe that they are not going away. But there is a good chance that you have already missed that sweet spot where the big money is made. So where is the balance? Should you join a new company or an older company? This is where I give you back the responsibility. The best that we can do in life is to make informed decisions. When looking at any home based business, we should detach ourselves emotionally, weigh everything out from a logical perspective and then look to our gut instinct. If people will buy the product that you are offering because the value justifies the cost and you can make a living doing that, you have eliminated a big part of the risk. The rest is up to a little luck, mixed with some preparation and smothered in persistence.

Successfully Yours,
